| The Law On Importing |
|
1. Can I collect the vehicle from the docks ??
Yes !!!!!!! Even though under Japanese rules, the Japanese number
plates MUST be removed in Japan prior to the vehicle being exported,
the vehicles can still be driven from point A to point B, point A being
the UK Docks, point B being your M.O.T/SVA preparation center (so
book it in for these tests before you leave the docks. If you get
stopped by the police, as does sometimes happen, as long as you have
the documents given to you when you leave the docks then you will be
OK. If however you get stopped coming out of Tescos after doing your
monthly shopping, then yes you will have a problem !! The actual Road
Traffic Act that this is covered by is the Vehicle Excise &
Registration Act 1994 Section 42 (4), so if you do get stopped by the
police just quote them this bit of legal knowledge and amaze them !!
If you want to double-check this, please ring the Dept of Transport 020 7944 2093
12. Registration ??
Once the vehicle has obtained its MOT/ESVA and you have valid
insurance, you can now register the vehicle. To do this you will need
the MOT and/or ESVA certificate, the de-registration supplied to you by
the Japanese shipper, both the pink Japanese and the white English
translation, and a form called a C & E 386. This is issued by H.M.
Customs to prove that you have legally imported the vehicle and
have paid to the Crown the duties and Vat's liable upon importation.
You cannot register the vehicle without the C & E 386 legally, if
you do so the implications are vary severe and could involve you having
a chat with H.M. Customs & Excise, your local friendly police, the
vehicle registration office etc. and they will not want to chat about
your holidays although, at the end of the chat they may offer you a few
nights at one of Her Majesty's hotels !! If anyone offers to register
your vehicle for you without these forms, do not be tempted, your
vehicle will be registered illegally and will be seized. Your insurance
would also be invalid which is another offense.
